Staying awake means staying alive." This is a slogan used to describe a research study on Sleep Apnea sponsored by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). The primary goal of the FMCSA is to reduce commercial motor vehicle related fatalities, as well as the number of persons injured in and by commercial vehicle related crashes by 50% by the year 2010. To assist in reaching this goal, the FMCSA established the "Medical Expert Panel." This panel, comprised of five of our Nation’s most distinguished practicing physicians, has recommended that the FMCSA make substantial changes to the current guidelines pertaining to Sleep Apnea, and incorporate methods to determine excessive daytime sleepiness in drivers. The FMCSA is currently reviewing data to determine the appropriate re-certification process that is to be launched within the next 24 to 36 months. What Employers Can Do With assistance from the Sleep Center, employers taking a proactive approach can save thousands in healthcare costs each year, and possibly, even save a life. Employers have an opportunity to make a meaningful and measurable contribution to organizational and personal well-being by recognizing and addressing the impact of sleep problems on individuals. |
